Eating should be a simple and natural thing, but for many people it has become a nightmare. The mind is there, continuously nagging: “This is too much, you are too fat, you should cut down…” By and by, with this constant pressure, we want to become unconscious when we eat and let the moments of taking in food slip by unnoticed by anyone—particularly ourselves. We eat quickly, often while preoccupied with other thoughts. The feelings of nourishment and satisfaction never arrive. Instead there remains an undercurrent of hunger, and the food that might assuage this hunger is feared as an enemy.
